As far as I knew, televangelist Pat Robertson hadn’t joined the Christian chorus blaming gays for the coronavirus. Until yesterday.

The man is 90 years old. It may take him longer to shuffle to the nasty place, but he gets there.

Yesterday on “The 700 Club,” a viewer named John inquired, “How can God heal our land and forgive the sins when abortion and same-sex marriage are laws and many people are anti-Israel. Doesn’t this prevent his healing and forgiveness?”

Robertson answered by bemoaning abortion. He didn’t go off on same-sex marriage specifically — maybe he’d forgotten about it — but he told John, “You are right.”

Robertson has a glittering history of rhetorical outrageousness. It’s impossible to forget his analysis of feminism as a “socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.”

Pithy, paranoid and perfect for a Christian Coalition fundraising letter, where those words first appeared.

If, at his age, Robertson can’t produce gems like this anymore, his fans needn’t worry that he’s mellowed. Yesterday’s response to John proves his heart is still in the wrong place.
