Chloe’s Story
What can get an eight-year-old girl expelled from school? Hurling Play-Doh at the teacher? Stepping on the guinea pig? Eating everyone’s gumdrop structures?
At Rejoice Christian Schools in Owasso, Okla., a second-grader named Chloe was banished after telling a female classmate on the playground that she had a crush on her.
The vice principal called Chloe to her office and informed her the Bible says that women can only marry men. When Chloe got home, said her mother, she cried and asked, “Does God still love me?”
You can shed some tears yourself if you need to. I’ll wait.
Chloe’s mother, Delanie Shelton, was summoned to pick Chloe up. The vice principal asked Shelton her views on “girls liking girls.” Shelton responded, “If I’m being honest with you, I think that it’s okay for girls to like girls.”
More tears? Okay, I’m not in a rush.
The next day the superintendent alerted the family that Chloe and her five-year-old brother were no longer students at Rejoice Christian Schools. On the one hand, that’s worth rejoicing over. On the other hand, Shelton now has to find a new school for her kids during a pandemic.
Chloe told a local TV station she felt “really sad and betrayed and kind of angry” over what happened. But many Oklahomans have registered their support, causing her to say, “I feel so loved and supported, thank you so much to everyone that helped me feel better for being who I am.”
Ugly crying suits you.
Chloe could grow up to be homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual, asexual, you name it. The one thing she won’t be after this experience is a bigot. On that score, she’s already smarter than the vice principal.
