An Exit Befitting a Stable Genius

Why does Donald Trump want a second term as president?

He’s facing a pandemic and economic collapse. The country is grappling with searing racial protests. He just suffered two significant Supreme Court losses. An insider’s tell-all that he couldn’t prevent describes him as corrupt and incompetent.

And that triumphant return to campaigning last night in Tulsa? Obama gets a bigger crowd when he brushes his teeth.

I assume that on the flight back to Washington Trump ripped every staffer on Air Force One a new and complicated orifice. But he should’ve spent his time pondering: Why am I doing this?

After all, the exit plan is obvious. Just blame China for the coronavirus, blame the Federal Reserve for the recession, blame Antifa for the civil unrest. Blame the outbreak of fair-mindedness among Supreme Court justices on windmill cancer. Blame the fake news for John Bolton’s book. (Who’s John Bolton? There’s no John Bolton. I don’t see him, do you?)

After claiming everything he did as president was a success and people tell him he’s the best president ever, Trump can then say he regretfully must decline to run again. Though he knows the American people want him to run for a second term, and a third and a fourth, and he’d be re-elected in a landslide like you’ve never seen before, his doctor tells him his bone spurs simply aren’t up to the task. And Dr. Fauci agrees.
